Selecting Starting and Ending Dates for Your School Year

When should you begin your academic year? When should you end?

The State of Florida's DOE requires that a course specified as "one year" last for 36 weeks or 180 hours and that a course specified as "half a year" last for 18 weeks or 90 hours. A school year is typically divided into two semesters or four quarters.

Total Work Days (Monday to Friday)

If your first day begins on August 24th, then adding 180 school days would create an ending date of May 3rd. However, a May 3rd ending date does not permit any time off which is unrealistic. An ending date of June 10th, creates 207 work days (i.e., Monday to Friday) which permits you to interject 27 vacation days. Extend the length of the course to include breaks as you see fit. Your vacation days might include

  • Labor Day,
  • Veterans’ Day,
  • Thanksgiving,
  • Christmas,
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day,
  • Presidents’ Day,
  • Spring Break,
  • Memorial Day, etc.

The BTS Reading Planner software will default to include national holidays. Your BTS Reading Planner schedule will also post the number of reading days on your schedule, so the software eliminates any manual counting of schooling days.
