Using Classic Films to Teach a Christian Worldview
There's not much good that comes out of Hollywood these days. Sometimes there's a gem, but for the most part, it's a wasteland. And when you do find a movie that looks family-friendly, there always seems to be something to spoil it. But Hollywood goes back a long way. There are dozens of movies from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s that are fun to watch, and they teach some great lessons, too. They include mysteries, science fiction, sports, adventure, great inventors, history, suspense, and so much more. If Christians are going to impact their world with a Christian worldview, film is an area in which we need to develop the necessary skills. Viewing the works of the master film storytellers is a good place to start. Learn what some of the best worldview movies are available for viewing.
Does the Creation/Evolution Debate Really Matter?
Why all the fuss over how we all got here? What difference does it make if it was God or Chance? Evolutionists tell us that the very discipline of science is at stake in this debate. If God is brought into the picture, so the argument goes, then there wont be any new medical discoveries since evolution is the foundation of modern science. This is a rather humorous argument since science was the product of a Christian worldview, and some of the worlds most famous scientists were Christiansfrom Johannes Kepler (15711630) and Robert Boyle (16271691) to Michael Faraday (17911867) and James Clerk Maxwell (18311879). While science is important in this debate, there is another consideration that people can more easily grasp. Can morality be accounted for given naturalistic assumptions? If the atheists are right can anything be wrong? Ideas have consequences. What are the real-world consequences if atheists get their way?
Defending Attacks on our Christian Heritage
Prepare your children so they can answer secular critics who claim that America did not have a Christian founding, the Constitution is silent on Christianity, the founders were Deists, that Thomas Paine was the real philosophical founder of America, the First Amendment calls for the separation of church and state, and much more.
Myths, Lies and Half Truths
Christian education is not a strategy of defense-only. God has called us to develop a comprehensive worldview and to apply that worldview to every area of life. How do we prepare our children to answer objections by some Christians who claim that God does not call on His people to engage the culture for Christ, that we are in a holding pattern until the world soon falls apart?
Defending the Christian Faith
Defending the Christian faith is not an option. At some level, Christians are always to be ready to give an answer to anyone who ask about the hope that gives us our faith (1 Peter 3:14-15). What is the best (bibical) methodology in defending the faith? Too many Christians adopt a position of philosophical neutrality, believing that facts and knowledge are neutral. If we can just pile on the facts, the unbeliever will abandon this position and embrace the Christian faith. Should we assume the validity of the Christian faith or attempt to prove it?
America's Christian History: Fact or Fiction
Most misunderstanding comes from failing to define terms and a failure to evaluate original source documents. Did America originate as a nation when the Constitution was drafted? Did the nation create the Constitution, or did the Constitution create the nation? What role did the states play in the founding of America? How religious were the state constitutions? Does a single line from the 1797 Treaty of Tripoli nullify all religious claims in hundreds of founding documents? Is our Constitution Godless"? What does the First Amendment actually say, and what does it really mean?"
Watching Classic Movies with Worldviews in Mind
What happens when you watch a movie with your children? Are you looking for pure entertainment? Do you only watch movies where one of the main characters becomes a Christian? Or do you understand that film, like life itself, is an expression of worldview principles. These often unstated principles are borrowed from God-ordained precepts that cannot be avoided by writers, producers, and directors no matter how nihilistic they might be in their own worldview beliefs. Older classic movies, while not perfect and not without some adult-like themes, dealt with life in terms of a worldview that articulated worldview principles that can be exploited by Christians who think in terms of worldviews. If we are going to teach our children to think biblically about all of life, we can use classic films to sharpen their skills. This talk will introduce you to some of the best movies to put your childs worldview thinking to work.
What We Thing We Know about History Might Not be True
History has been used to distort reality. Some of the distortion has a purpose behind it. Those who control the historical record control how we think about the world in which we live and how we react to cultural trends. Much of what the Myth-Historians have written has been used to discredit Christianity, everything from geo-centrism and the flat earth to slavery and the secular founding of America. Then there are some Christian historical myths that need to be dispelled. Did James Madison really praise the Ten Commandments? Is the de Tocqueville quotation about churches accurate? Teaching honest critical thinking skills is a necessity if we are going to capture the next generation.
