Introducing Home Education
This workshop is designed for the parent who is considering home education. The first question to ask is "Shall I home school?" We'll look at the common reasons for home schooling with a focus on how to tell whether it's right for you. The second question, "How do I begin?" will be answered in a step-by step manner not only showing what needs to be done, but when and how. Finally, we'll make sure to cover the common questions of "What about socialization?", "What if I don't feel qualified?", and "What about high school, college, or hard academic subjects like chemistry or trigonometry?"
Junior High Needs
Junior High is a unique and special time of growing up. In order to take full advantage of these precious years, spiritual, physical and academic needs must all be considered. In this workshop, we will cover how parents can custom-design their students' junior high years to help them to "grow and wax strong in spirit, becoming filled with wisdom; and having the grace of God upon them." (Luke 2:40)
High School Overview
How do you decide what to study in high school? How do you know that your teen is learning enough (and of the right things)? How can parents continue a home-school lifestyle during the high school years? Must home-school students model their high school years after the institutionalized educational style of learning? Come and learn how to make your high school years special, wonderful, and complete as we discuss the overall plans needed to teach high school at home.
Designing Courses for Junior & Senior High School
Once decisions have been made about what to require for high school graduation, once the overall plan has been set, there is still much to do. How do you set up each course? Courses can be designed or modified by using pre-packaged curricula, by using a variety of materials you already have on hand, or by outlining the course and finding materials to fit your needs. We will discuss these methods of course planning, and will also cover grading, keeping track of assignments with no stress, and record keeping.
After High School
As many of our home educated students approach graduation, decisions must be made about the future. This workshop will focus on the variety of directions available to the home school graduate, including apprenticeship, college (on campus or at home), getting a good job, and more. Entry requirements, resources available, and practical considerations for each option will be discussed.
Making the Transition from Campus School to Homeschool
If your children have spent time in a campus-school program, your family will have an adjustment to make during the first year of home education. Not only will your children’s daily life change, but so will yours! In this workshop, we will explore practical steps to take in making the transition, what to expect as you begin, and the most common problems encountered by both children and parents during that first transition year.
