Taking the Fear Factor Out of Science Co-ops (There Will Be Worms!)
This discussion will include practical helps to organize and lead a science co-op, emphasizing encouragement to parents. It will look at how often classes should meet, what should be done in classes (labs, discussions and/or tests), how to impart enthusiasm to the students and involve them in the discussions, and how to include the parents during the rest of the week so you both can ensure their children succeed. Additionally, coop coordinators will be encouraged to delve into this opportunity even if they do not feel qualified -- if the "unknown" causes fear, then hopefully this discussion will inform enough to take some of that fear away. While the focus of this workshop is on science coops there are many practical tips that will applicable to a coop on any subject.
The Apprentice: Getting High School Credit for Internships
An internship is one of the best ways for a student to explore a career. And with the flexibility that homeschooling offers, most high school students have the time to intern in a field of their interest. Why not document their experience and award them with high school credit? This workshop will highlight choosing the right internship arrangement, preparing a list of educational and experiential goals and recording this beneficial learning opportunity.
Evolution Doesn't Work for Sea Creatures
In this workshop, the many ocean creatures that have features which defy the processes of evolution will be highlighted. The discussion will also include some of the parameters of the ocean - such as salinity - which speak against an earth that is supposedly millions of years old. Students also may want to attend this discussion because there will be lessons on exactly how fishes [yes, that is grammatically-correct in scientific terms] remove the oxygen out of seawater and their efficient systems of doing this. Sherri will lead you to take a look at "living fossils" that apparently do not realize they should now be either extinct or look drastically different than they do today. The physical features of echolocation in dolphins and other whales also will be covered. And we cannot forget sharks with their amazing physical abilities to detect electrical impulses from miles away!
Standing Strong When I Am Weak
When we feel that God is calling us to do a difficult work, we can be sure He will use it to bless and encourage us, as well as teach us. Arguably, homeschooling is one of the most difficult tasks one can undertake, but the blessings are boundless! In this talk, walk through 1 and 2 Corinthians to discover how when we are weak, God gives unexpected blessings and ultimately gets the glory!
Bringing Your Homeschool Before the Throne
A path without a purpose is difficult to build because there is no enthusiasm and no direction. Not only do we need direction but we also need devotion to do a task, and this is especially true of homeschooling. Come look at the commonplace construction of Nehemiah's wall to see how ordinary things, if we are called to do them, are the most exciting things we can do!
Homeschooling and Homemaking: From Mis-organization to Miss Organization
“How do I get it all done?” That seems to be a common frustration for homeschool mothers. Though juggling the educational needs of multiple children while maintaining a household can certainly be a daunting task, there are several strategies which will help moms to navigate their school year and still keep an organized home. Even though we will not see perfection this side of heaven, it is still possible to teach algebra, have dinner on the table by 6:00, and be able to find your sunglasses all in one day!
