Have you always believed English is illogical and inconsistent?

In this workshop your understanding of English will be transformed! Award winning author, Denise Eide will reveal phonograms and spelling rules which explain 98% of English words. No longer will you need to tell your children, “that is an exception,” when they misread or misspell a word.R32;We will learn:

  • The rule which explains the two sounds for C in accent and describes more than 6,000 words!
  • Three of the nine reasons for a Silent Final E.
  • Why we drop the Silent Final E in servicing but not in serviceable, and much more!
  • Why many math and science minded kids struggle with reading and spelling.

If you have always struggled with spelling or reading, or if you have children who struggle, do not miss this revolutionary workshop. You will leave wondering why someone didn’t tell you this in kindergarten.

The Literacy Crisis: How it Affects Home Educators and How We Can Make a Difference

Our nation is facing a crisis that affects all levels of our society: 68% of the nation’s eighth graders read below grade level and only only 3% of adults read at the highest levels of literacy. Join award-winning author and home-school mother Denise Eide as she uncovers the depths of our educational crisis, explains why it has occurred, and challenges us to improve literacy in our homes and communities.
Denise reveals the hidden reality that a majority of adults in our nation struggle with read and/or spelling, especially people with logical engineering minds. She removes the shame by demonstrating that we cannot know what we were never taught and demonstrates a simple, inexpensive way out: teach how the complex code of English really works.
In this workshop we will learn:

  • What is the literacy crisis and why it matters.
  • How a cultural wide belief that English is illogical fuels illiteracy.
  • NIHCD research that demonstrates how to teach all students how to read.
  • Why the Literacy Crisis should matter to Christians.
  • How to become a positive voice and improve literacy in your community.

Denise is a positive and engaging speaker who brings a message of hope that we can reverse the Literacy Crisis through a grassroots movement and ensure that all students in the next generation learn to read at grade level.

Educating the Whole Child (45 min-60 min)
So often we teach that education is first from the waist up, then the neck up, and finally the left side of the brain. As homeschoolers, however, we have an opportunity to educate the whole child. True education addresses not only the mental, by physical, social, spiritual and emotional aspects of the child. And a true education is tailored to who God created each child to be. Come and be inspired to train up your children, free from the box.

Respecting our Children’s Hearts as We Educate (45 min-60 min)
God has created each of our children in His image. Yet, there are seasons and even children who challenge our ability as parents to teach with loving kindness and patience. In this workshop we will explore how to encourage our children in difficult seasons, how to grow as parents with our difficult children and how to turn the struggles into something beautiful – closer relationships.

Homeschooling in Times of Crisis: or Less than Ideal Circumstances (45 min-60 min)
Families who homeschool eventually all face times of crisis, whether major illness, financial hardships, death, marriage difficulties, mental illness, etc. During these trying times, we usually question if we should continue to homeschool. Denise Eide, a homeschool mother of 4, has walked through a dark and trying season. She will share the grace filled perspectives she has gained, including how trials can be turned into greater life lessons and opportunities to grow in relationship. Homeschooling is about educating whole children, ready to thrive in the real world. Come and be encouraged how God turns trials for good and hopefully leave some of the guilt behind.

Teaching Handwriting with Success
Developing fluid, legible handwriting is foundational to education, yet this basic skill is often neglected in today's world of computers. Explore the history of handwriting education and methods for teaching handwriting, so that all students succeed. This workshop provides practical information like handwriting games and practical ideas that can be used as soon as parents return to teaching.

Laying the Foundations for Reading - Early Childhood Reading Games and Activities
Literacy is the foundation of all education. By providing preschool children with language learning opportunities that prepare them for reading, we can smooth their transition into the printed word. This workshop presents language learning games and ideas on teaching phonograms to young students, as well as the latest literacy research on early childhood and reading. Each participant is provided a handout with ideas they can use with their children at home.
