Taking part in the Advanced Placement program—Why? How?
Susan will give background on just what the Advanced Placement testing program developed by the College Board is, and what is involved in preparing to take these exams. How ‘ready’ do you need to be to take part? What are the benefits of having AP preparation and exam scores on your high school transcript? How do homeschoolers take part? Can homeschoolers prepare independently or do they have to take a course? What is the AP Audit process, and how does this apply to homeschoolers? How do AP exams compare to CLEP exams—and do colleges treat these exam programs differently? What are Online AP courses like, and how do I find out more info on the range of providers of these courses? Susan will also share specific stories about students who’ve taken part in the PA Homeschoolers AP Online courses, including her own AP US History course, which she’s been leading for homeschoolers across the US for over 14 years.
Dealing with Achievement Testing
Susan will answer many of the questions you may have about standardized testing, required for 3rd, 5th, and 8th grade homeschoolers in PA. How can you help prepare your children effectively for these types of tests—and is this any different from what you normally are doing in day-to-day homeschooling? What are the factors you can control in achievement testing—and what factors are beyond your control? How can you help prepare a very anxious child (and find out the two core reasons a child might be especially anxious…)? When you get test scores back, what can you learn from them—what do the numbers ‘mean’ and how can you find out more information? What can you do if your child scores poorly on one or more test sections? Should you aim for group testing or individual testing—what the advantages of each situation? How should you adjust your homeschooling once you get back test scores—or should you at all? Come to this session to have achievement testing demystified!
