Nurturing Brave Writers
There’s hope for your reluctant writer! There’s inspiration for your natural writers! Find out why kids learn to write more effectively when we use professional writing tactics rather than educational models. This workshop will help homeschool parents unblock resistant writers and unleash resilient ones. Julie will also cover the importance of freewriting and send you home with an eight-week writing plan.

Natural Stages of Growth in Writing
Do you wonder if your child is ready to write on his or her own? How much help should you give your struggling writer? When is the right time to introduce format writing? This workshop offers the homeschooling parent a model for evaluating your child’s current developmental stage in the process of becoming a competent and confident writer. By the end of the workshop, you will have an
understanding of how to tailor your child’s writing program into one that suits your child’s skill level while challenging him or her to grow as well.

Brave Writer Lifestyle
This workshop helps parents learn how to live a language arts rich lifestyle that supports and nourishes the development of writers. We look at the importance of poetry, art, nature, teatimes, copywork, dictation, word play, freewriting, and Shakespeare in creating a context where writing risks are natural and enjoyable. We’ll also look at the role of Brave Writer products and classes in facilitating parents to be the writing coaches and allies your kids deserve.

Help For High School Writing
When is it time to learn the essay format? Does my student really need to learn how to write a research paper? What should I do if I’ve ignored writing until high school? This workshop gives you, the homeschooling parent, the tools to evaluate your teen writer and the means to bring him or her up to the right academic level in preparation for college writing. Don’t despair! It’s never too late to rescue your teens from too little writing.

SAT/ACT Essay Writing Preparation
Timed essay writing demands a different set of skills than the typical expository essay. The SAT and ACT tests require your kids to address a topic without preparation in an essay format within 30 minutes. Don’t despair! There is a way to prepare ahead of time in order to write competent, satisfying essays that will get the job done for college applicants. Find out how in this workshop.

Rescuing Reluctant Writers
It seems everyone has one reluctant writer. And even the “natural writers” give their parents fits (they write run-ons and never finish their stories and hate assigned writing but love to keep journals…) The Friday Night Workshop is devoted to stripping away myths about writing and the teaching of it.

  • Are you under the impression that kids need to write every day?
  • Do you wonder why your 12 year old is a bad speller?
  • How much help can you give before the writing is no longer an original product and is yours instead?
  • How do you foster an environment of safety and risk at the same time?
  • When should I worry that my child is behind in writing? What should I do then?

We’ll look at how relying on the old adages about writing actually cripples your writers, or damages their authentic voices. Not only will we look at your writers’ struggles, but also your insecurities about teaching writing. Friday night is both therapy and practical support in liberating your writing program from the oppression of wrong thinking about writing. Don’t miss it!
