Online Learning Helps Struggling Readers & Writers
At least 25% of children struggle with reading and/or writing. Some parents make the decision to homeschool, in part, because the public school approaches for helping struggling readers and writers are so often ineffective. Until recently, it has been exceedingly hard for parents to find homeschool friendly, professional help for children with language processing differences. In this seminar, a former homeschool mom, a speech-language pathologist with over 30 years of experience working with struggling readers and writers and a university professor of online education will describe and illustrate how online services work. These services can be much less expensive, yet much more focused and family-friendly than traditional services. A case study of a bright, 8 year old boy with dyslexia will be used to illustrate how online services work.
Evaluation of The Struggling Reader or Writer
Children with language processing differences typically struggle with reading, writing and/or spelling. To select the best method for helping a child, his/her language processing strengths and weaknesses must be clearly understood. However, traditional psycho-educational evaluations are not designed to do this. In this seminar case studies will be used to contrast the purpose of a language processing evaluation with that of a traditional psycho educational evaluation. Examples of information obtained from both types of evaluations will be examined and discussed.
