Rene Hayes is the homeschool mother of two children one of whom is autistic. As a child she experienced many of the challenges faced by her own son. A graduate of Baylor University she attended both public and private schools in the States and overseas and has had teachers from many different parts of the world, each of whom brought a unique perspective and teaching style to her life. In pursuing avenues by which to educate her own son she utilizes many different methodologies to address the unique challenges autism represents. Attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, dyslexia, dysgraphia, echolalia, sensory disorders, language delays, sleep disorders, developmental delays, motor planning problems, apraxia/dyspraxia, tantruming, and a myriad of other issues are all part of the autism spectrum diagnosis. Using a hands-on learning approach Rene teaches on many different levels to address both areas of strength and need.
In addition to homeschooling Rene coordinates and teaches in two inclusive programs for special needs and typically developing homeschooled students. The programs, Farm School and Fun School, provide hands-on opportunities for students to tackle their unique challenges. Incorporating horses and ranch projects Farm School encourages independence, student cooperation, and confidence. Fun School includes academics, music, drama, sports and practical skills such as auto mechanics, carpentry and cooking. Rene also coordinates the curriculum portion of the S.H.A.R.E. library.
