How to Make Your Children Rich! The Power of Reading Aloud
Reading is at the very core of education. Countless studies have shown that the single most important factor in helping your children become successful learners is reading to them. A read aloud time with Mom or Dad helps your children associate reading with pleasure. It builds vocabulary and provides background knowledge for other life experiences. A regular story time can be an aid to building character within your children. It provides a positive reading role model through Mom, Dad, or a sibling. And reading aloud exposes your children to more challenging literature than they would likely choose themselves; therefore, it helps them make wise reading choices later in life.
Many parents are apprehensive to start a read aloud time. Children of varying ages can make it especially challenging to choose books that the oldest through the youngest will all enjoy hearing. Busy schedules get in the way of establishing a regular story time. And parents are often concerned about which books are appropriate.
This session will attempt to answer all of your questions and provide practical tips for establishing a read aloud time in your family. A home schooling father of 4 children, an elementary, language arts teacher for 23 years, and the director of development for The Family Vision Library, Jamie Stull brings a wealth of both personal and professional experience to the subject of reading aloud.
"You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be –
I had a mother who read to me."
— Strickland Gillilan

Jamie Stull has been married to his wife, Betsy, for 28 wonderful years. They have been blessed to raise and home school four children. Micah (22) is a musician, and he is pursuing a career in music and production. Johanna (20) is completing a degree as a piano performance major at MOBAP. Myra (18) is finishing her high school course work and excels in creative writing. And Josiah (15) enjoys many creative and athletic opportunities as he journeys through the last few years of school. All of the Stull children have been read to during their years at home, and they have developed a love for reading as young adults.
Jamie is the Director of Development for The Family Vision Library in St. Peters, MO. When he is not actively marketing and raising funds, Jamie enjoys sharing his love of reading and children’s literature with home schooling parents who visit the library. Jamie taught 5th and 6th grades in both public and private schools for most of the past 25 years.
Jamie is passionate about serving others, meeting new people, outdoors activities, and music. In his free time he enjoys singing with the international championship chorus, The Ambassadors of Harmony.
